An Adventure Through a Bamboo Forest
West Maui West Maui

Waihee Ridge Trail
This 2.5 mile trail climbs the windward slope of West Maui to a glorious peak overlooking Wailuku. To get to the top, hikers travel from Maluhia's boy scout camp through pastures, thickets, and forests. As always, travel with a camera in hand -- great shots of Mount Eke surrounded by clouds can be taken on this journey.

Sliding Sands Trail
This 12.9 mile trail, which starts at 9,700 feet and ends at 2,800 feet, takes adventures seekers from the summit of the world's largest dormant volcano all the way into a crater! Exceedingly strenuous, this hike is not for the light-herted or inexperienced. It is, however, not to miss for those who are prepared to cope with natural conditions.

Pipiwai Trail
Favorited by my son, the Pipiwai trail is a wonderful adventure which takes nature lovers through bamboo forests, across streams, and past waterfalls. It is located near the Seven Sacred Pools and takes anywhere between 2 1/2 to 5 hours to complete depending upon how fast you hike and, of course, how many pictures you stop to take along this 4 mile-round trip trail. Its ending site, an 185 foot waterfall named Makahiko Falls, is truly inspiring.

Wai'anapanapa Coastal Trail
Located near Waianapanapa State Park, this 3 mile trail hugs the coastline north of Hana Bay. As one walks beside the jagged coastline, he/she can notice how smooth stepping stones have been set within what used to be running lava and hot cinders. Boots are recommended to be worn on this trail so that hikers can best enjoy nice breezes and vivid, green views (without hurting their feet).

Kaeleku Ulaino Road
This Hana Highway side road, which is frequented only by four-wheel drive vehicles and motorcycles, also makes for an excellent 3 mile hike. After traveling through rich pastures and lush, jungle-like forests, walkers will come across Ulaino -- an abandoned village only noticable because of its stone walls and a couple of houses. Just a few steps from here is a small parking lot and the stunning Blue Angle Falls.
